Tools for pottery wheels

The euphoria of a new potter’s wheel is great, but what else do you need for turning?

Here I have created a small guide with pretty much all the tools and supplies that might be needed when turning on the wheel.

The essentials

First of all, you need a turning clay. That’s for sure! Unshamotted clays, i.e. turning clays, or lightly shamotted clays such as the W 02/25 build-up clay are particularly suitable for turning.

In addition, you will also need a clay cutter with which you can cut down a piece of clay. It is also quite helpful when you are done turning and you want to remove your work from the potter’s wheel.

With the sponge you can easily add or remove water. It is also very good for plastering.

Another accessory for potter’s wheels is the turntable. In its colorful variety, it is a welcome help for your hands when turning. With the turning rail you can smooth and shape your clay according to your ideas.

Last but not least, it’s time for turning. This is where the linking slings come into play. Just as with the turning slides, there are also many variations here. Basically, however, the slings are suitable for surface design and for turning. Of course, you can also use them in other areas.

After turning, your work is finished, so all that’s left is to put it in the oven!

Additional materials

Turning aid – The turning aid is placed on a suitable turntable. It helps you to turn your works more easily.

The three adjustable holders help by centering the workpiece in the middle and keeping it stable while the potter’s wheel is turning. So you can concentrate undisturbed on the turning.

Here are instructions for assembling the turning aid.

Turning tool – When you are almost at the end of your work, you can use the turning tool to finish your work.

Pulling iron – Similar to the turning iron, you can either smooth the surface structure or work in effects. It is also well suited for turning.

Pottery compass – This tool is great for works of which you want to have several identical. With the potter’s compass you simply take the measurement of your desired bowl and transfer it to the next piece.

The double compass is particularly suitable for turning a lid, which should then also fit perfectly on the counterpart.

Pottery knife – With it you can cut your clay. You can also easily cut smaller and larger holes in the clay.

Hole Cutter – As the name suggests, you can also use it to poke a great hole in your clay by rotating the tool as you pierce it.

Torsion bar – For high vessels or narrow necks, the torsion bar is particularly suitable as a substitute for the second hand. It makes it very easy to reach deeper corners.

Tools for pottery wheels from everyday objects

Some everyday objects you can easily convert.

  • Credit cards or other old cards from your wallet, for example, make excellent substitutes for the scraper.
  • Old combs and saw blades help roughen clay and change the surface texture.
  • Some kitchen utensils, as well as the spatula or cooking spoon, are memorable substitutes for smoothing the surface and giving texture.

These are just three of many examples, but so you see that you do not have to buy everything, but some things can also simply use versatile. Things that should actually end up in the trash and now get a second chance. So be creative with your tools and try them out!
