Clay without firing, does it work?

Working with clay is not just a hobby for many. Despite the joy, however, firing without your own kiln usually involves a lot of effort, because a firing service is not always to be found nearby.

In order to be able to model without a kiln and to create the finished work completely at home, there are some masses that do not require firing and still look good!

What you need and what you need to pay attention to, I’ll show you in this article.

How can I make pottery at home without firing?

Basically you need only a suitable mass, time and a little creativity 😉

Air-drying clay is easily moldable, so you can easily make plates, bowls or various decorative objects such as Christmas ornaments or small figures. In addition, you can make stamps for your normal clay from the air-hardening mass, which you can wipe off after use and reuse. This is how you create individual patterns for your works.
You can find more unique inspirations on Pinterest. 🙂

What you need exactly depends on your desired work. For example, you can roll out the mass with a rolling pin, use a bowl as an indentation or rollover mold or work certain patterns into the clay with a lace cloth, a leaf or other objects.

As with pottery with “normal” clay you can also use

  • the thumb pressure technique -> with your thumb you press a hollow into the clay and keep pressing until the desired object is created,
  • the bead technique -> clay beads are stacked on top of each other (with slip in between) and the transitions are either spread or left (even partially) visible,
  • or also the slab technique -> with a rolling pin and two flat wooden sticks you can determine the thickness of your clay and even glue individual slabs together to form an object with a cutting pattern and slip,

So that the workpiece is not only white or red at the end, you can color the mass with a few drops of acrylic paint by kneading the color into the dough. If you only want certain areas to be colored, you can also paint the work with a brush or sponge after it has dried.

To make the whole thing durable, there are a few methods to seal the work. The best known is acrylic-based gloss paint, which you can get in any hardware store. Depending on whether you prefer a matte or glossy surface, you can use the spray paint to seal your work after drying.apply.

Is there a clay that does not require firing?

As you have already noticed above, there are air-drying masses. Besides the classic white and red, there are also others that you can get in pretty much any color.

Nevertheless, I would like to introduce you to the two classic masses. Both can be fired in the oven at up to 110°C to reduce the drying time and make the work more resistant to breakage.

Even though they are called Airdry, they can still be fired in ceramic kiln at 20 – 1200°C. During this process, however, there may be odor due to combustion of organic binders in the mass.

Modeling clays therefore become hard after a certain drying time of about two weeks, unlike polymer clay, which does not contain clay minerals. This really only hardens when you bake it in the oven.

In Austria, Germany and Switzerland, FIMO is best known as a polymer clay, but there are also other masses such as Keramiplast, papier-mâché, wood modeling flour and many others.

Another possibility is to mold normal clay and let it dry in the air. In order for your work to stand longer, you should place it in a place where the humidity is not too high. So that it does not fall apart, you should not take it in your hands after placing it. Thus, it is really only a decorative object and not a commodity.

What do I have to pay attention to?

When drying the clay, you should pay attention to a few things, so that in the end you are not disappointed with the result.

The best condition for drying the clay is an almost constant room temperature, which means that you should minimize the climatic changes in this place as much as possible. Neither drafts, nor radiators, nor sunlight are optimal for the process.

To ensure that the work dries evenly, you should rotate it a little at regular intervals to allow the lying surface to dry better as well. Especially here, make sure that you attack it evenly when lifting it up, so that you avoid dents.

Objects made of air-hardened clay are sensitive to moisture and should not be placed in the bathroom or kitchen. Thus, they are neither waterproof nor water resistant. They are also more susceptible to cracking or crazing, but you can touch them up a bit with the sealer.
