Acrylic paint – ideas, inspirations and facts

After the cold and sunless days it was finally here: spring! With the sun then also came the urge to go out and creatively develop more again, because home office and homeschooling without variety quickly become uninteresting on warm days. Therefore, I have looked around a little on Tiktok and Instagram and found a few trends with acrylic paint, which I have tried out right away.

So you can see my home office in a different way in this blog post. In addition, there are a few facts about acrylic paint, more ideas and inspiration, what you can do with it and a tutorial on how you can spice up your old vases again!

The most important thing first: Acrylic paint must not be burned!

What I did...

To start right with the great part, I show you times my “works of art” that I have made in the last month. First of all, our most viewed reel – an old vase reinterpreted.

For this you need the following:

  • Vase
  • Acrylic paint of your choice
  • Baking soda (for a rough surface)
  • Brush or sponge for application

Before painting, you should clean the glass thoroughly and make sure that there is no water on the surface.

As you can see in the video, this is not witchcraft at all, does not take long and the result can definitely be seen.

Here you can find more acrylic pearl paints.

Furthermore, I have an old tea light jar, screw jars and even more vases transformed into new and beautiful decoration. With these two vases, however, I have taken on the one hand two different colors, on the other hand I have also worked with stamp mats here.

Then it went on with my terracotta pots. Since I have some of them, the idea came to me that it would also be quite nice if they looked more individual. Without further ado, these two videos were created:

The white pot I have at the end then also decorated with a few mosaic stones, which were left over from older handicrafts. By the way, the plants are still doing great 😉

Then I also found gaudy pots in the cellar that have literally screamed for a makeover – I could no longer be stopped. Since it has become quite a few new plant pots, I’ve captured them all in a video.

But one in particular has pleased me. For this project I just took an old sponge and a lot of acrylic paint. At the end I decorated it with a stamp mat and finally it was ready.

How can I seal acrylic paint?

In the course of my projects, I then asked myself how I can also be sure that my work will stay with me longer.

Here are some methods

  • Acrylic-based varnish (you can get it at the hardware store),
  • hairspray,
  • varnish

and others.

With the sealing methods with varnish or similar, you usually have the choice between glossy and matte. However, the best method is always the application through an atomizer, i.e. a can, since you can thus achieve an even result.

10 facts about the acrylic paint

  1. Acrylic paint must not be fired!
  2. It consists of color pigments, binder (acrylic binder) and solvent (water).
  3. The different colors can be mixed with each other
  4. It can be diluted with water
  5. After drying the paint is waterproof
  6. It is also odorless
  7. For outdoor use there are extra marked acrylic paints (lightfast, weather resistant, etc.)
  8. Is versatile – can be used on wood, ceramics, glass, concrete, canvas, and more
  9. Becomes glossy or more luminous with some methods (varnish, lacquer, etc.)
  10. Is suitable for everyone (including children – look for labels!) and can be used for pretty much any painting technique

More inspiration

If you want to embellish your terracotta pots as well, there are countless possible designs and techniques you can use to do so. Here are a few of them:

Old screw jars and bottles are super suitable as a gift in the form of a vase or to store cookies or messages.

How about such sweet bowls for jewelry storage? You can make them yourself individually and without a kiln. For this you need air-drying clay. You can then color or decorate it with acrylic paints (but you can’t put it in the oven).

More information on this topic can be found here: 6 tips: Firing clay in the oven & clay without firing, is that possible?

Of course, that’s not all you can do with acrylic paints, because the imagination is ultimately no limits!
Anyway, I hope that I could inspire you with one or the other and wish you lots of fun being creative!
